How to Start a Dropshipping Business in India (2026 Step-by-Step Guide)

Dropshipping is one of the lowest-risk ways to start an online business in India — you sell products online without holding inventory, and your supplier ships directly to the customer. But before you launch, you need clarity on three things every Indian beginner asks: Is it legal? Do I need GST? Is it actually profitable? This guide answers all three, then walks you through the exact steps to start.

Is dropshipping legal in India?

Yes — dropshipping is 100% legal in India. There is no law that prohibits selling products online without holding inventory. You are running a legitimate retail business; the only difference is your supplier fulfils the order on your behalf. What you do need is standard business compliance — a registered business entity (or at minimum a proprietorship), a GST number once you cross the threshold, and clean payment gateway paperwork.

Is dropshipping profitable in India?

Short answer: yes, but only with the right model. Two paths work in 2026:

  • Domestic dropshipping (India → India): Lower margins (15–30%), faster shipping, easier customer support, COD challenges.
  • International dropshipping (India → US/UK/AU/EU): Higher margins (40–70%), prepaid orders, stronger currency (USD/GBP), bigger market. This is what we teach at Bcom2Ecom.

Most Indian beginners burn out chasing cheap Indian COD orders with 10% margins. The math is simple: a $30 product selling in the US at a 50% margin gives you ~₹1,200 profit per order. The same effort in India might net you ₹150. Choose your market deliberately.

Step 1: Pick your model and market

Decide upfront: are you targeting India or international customers? Your entire stack — supplier, store platform, payment gateway, ads — depends on this choice. For international, use Shopify + Stripe/PayPal + suppliers from AliExpress, CJ Dropshipping, Zendrop or Spocket. For India, use Shopify/WooCommerce + Razorpay + suppliers from GlowRoad, Meesho Supplier, or direct manufacturers in Delhi/Surat/Tirupur.

Step 2: Register your business

You have three practical options:

  • Sole Proprietorship — cheapest and fastest. Get a Udyam (MSME) certificate, open a current account, done. Best for testing.
  • LLP (Limited Liability Partnership) — good middle ground if you have a co-founder.
  • Private Limited Company — best for scaling, raising capital, or working with international payment gateways like Stripe (Stripe India requires a registered company).

Most beginners start as a proprietor and upgrade to Pvt Ltd once revenue crosses ₹15–20 lakh/year.

Step 3: GST registration

Here's the rule most guides get wrong: if you sell through an e-commerce operator (Shopify with Razorpay/Stripe counts as your own store, not an operator — but marketplaces like Amazon/Flipkart do), GST rules change.

  • Selling on your own Shopify store to Indian customers: GST required once turnover crosses ₹40 lakh (goods) or ₹20 lakh (services) — ₹20 lakh / ₹10 lakh in special-category states.
  • Selling on marketplaces (Amazon, Flipkart, Meesho): GST is mandatory from day one, regardless of turnover.
  • Selling only to international customers (export of goods): GST registration is still recommended so you can claim it as a zero-rated export and get input credit refunds.

Registration is free on gst.gov.in and takes 7–10 working days.

Step 4: Find winning products

Do not pick products because they look cool. Use this filter:

  • Solves a real, specific problem
  • Not easily available in local stores
  • Selling price ₹1,500+ (or $25+ international) so ad costs make sense
  • Lightweight, non-fragile, no batteries (shipping headaches)
  • Has proven demand — check TikTok, Instagram Reels, and competitor Shopify stores

Step 5: Build your store

Use Shopify. Yes, WooCommerce is cheaper, but Shopify's ecosystem (apps, themes, checkout, support) pays for itself in the first month. Pick a fast theme (Dawn, Refresh, Sense), install DSers or Zendrop for supplier automation, and keep the store to 5–6 essential pages: Home, Product, Cart, Checkout, About, Contact.

Step 6: Set up payments

  • Domestic: Razorpay or Cashfree — supports UPI, cards, netbanking, COD.
  • International: Stripe (needs Pvt Ltd), PayPal (works with proprietorship for exports), or Shopify Payments where available.

Step 7: Drive traffic

Paid ads are the fastest way to validate a product. Start with Meta Ads (Facebook + Instagram) — ₹500–1,000/day is enough to test. TikTok Ads work brilliantly for international. Do not touch Google Search Ads until you have a proven winning product; the intent is different and costs are higher.

Step 8: Fulfil, support, iterate

The unsexy part is where 90% of dropshippers quit. You need to:

  • Reply to customer emails within 12 hours
  • Track supplier reliability every week
  • Handle refunds and disputes gracefully — this protects your payment gateway
  • Kill losing products fast, scale winners hard

How much money do you need to start?

Realistic beginner budget for international dropshipping from India:

  • Shopify: ~₹2,500/month (Basic plan)
  • Domain: ₹800/year
  • Apps (DSers, reviews, upsells): ₹0–2,000/month
  • Ads budget to test: ₹25,000–40,000
  • Business registration + GST: ₹2,000–15,000 depending on entity

Plan for ₹40,000–60,000 to properly test 2–3 products before you find a winner. Anyone telling you ₹5,000 is enough is selling you a course, not the truth.

Common mistakes Indian beginners make

  • Copying random YouTube "winning products" that are already saturated
  • Skipping GST/business registration and getting Razorpay/Stripe accounts frozen
  • Choosing India as their market when they have no unfair advantage there
  • Quitting after ₹10,000 ad spend on one product
  • Ignoring branding — treating the store like a temporary hustle instead of a business
